A visiting salesman lost $500,000 worth of silver jewelry when his car was broken into on West Broadway Feb. 13. Vancouver Police Const. Lindsey Houghton said the salesman had been in town for a trade show when he parked his rental car in the 900-block of West Broadway about 7:15 p.m. to go out for dinner. "When he returned to the car just before 8 p.m., he discovered that the car had been broken into and several Samsonite-style suitcases and a laptop bag that he had left in plain view inside the car had been stolen," Houghton said. "The suitcases contained approximately $500,000 in sterling silver jewelry that the victim had been showing at a local trade show." Houghton said investigators believe the thief got into the vehicle by prying the driver's door just enough. He said witnesses described the suspect as a South Asian man in his late 20s, about 5'6" tall and 180 lbs. "He was wearing a grey zip-up hoodie, a black ball cap and black gloves. Two other men nearby, described as white and Aboriginal or possibly Asian, may have been accomplices," Houghton said. "All of the jewelry is marked with the wholesaler's markings of SSK." Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at (604) 717-9049 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, he said. "Police are reminding everyone not to leave any property in plain view because if you leave it, thieves won't," he said.
